Survey: Economic Anxiety on the Rise for Older NV Voters
Thursday, August 9, 2012
LAS VEGAS - A new survey released today features an "Anxiety Index," and it reports that economic security concerns are driving that index way up for older Nevada voters. Deborah Jaquith with AARP Nevada says health care expenses and retirement security are among the biggest concerns for Nevada voters who are age 50 and older.
"Sixty-seven percent of the folks we surveyed believe that they will have to delay retirement; another 53 percent worry they won't have a comfortable retirement; and 46 percent don't think they'll ever be able to retire."
Jaquith says older Nevada voters are also very concerned about the ongoing gridlock in Washington, D.C. As of today, the survey from AARP finds the race for president in a dead heat among older Nevada voters, with President Obama and Mitt Romney each getting 46 percent.
The survey finds 74 percent of older Nevada voters think the candidates are doing a poor job addressing issues such as strengthening Social Security.
"This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue, it's an issue that affects all older Americans. People want bipartisan solutions and bipartisan information - everybody is concerned."
On the campaign trail, both presidential contenders say jobs are their top priority, but Jaquith says this survey found that issue is barely on the radar when it comes to older Nevada voters.
"The top issues for boomers who are still in the work force are prices rising faster than their income and not being able to retire when they want to for financial reasons - jobs don't even factor in."
