ST. PAUL, Minn. - A central Minnesota child-care provider says the better educated her peers are in this field, the better the care the kids receive. Tammy Oveson of Waite Park says she's been taking classes through the Minnesota Child Care Resource and Referral Network for years.

"I have this need to know that I am doing everything correctly for the children and the families in my program, because early childhood is such an important time. They say 90 percent of brain development occurs by the age of five."

Oveson is among the 10,000 providers who have used the Eager-to-Learn online program, which celebrates ten years of service this month. The courses are open to anyone, including parents.

Cory Woosley, who manages the Eager-to-Learn program, says being able to offer classes online has been especially beneficial in Greater Minnesota, where access would otherwise be more difficult.

"Because in child-care resource and referral, we do have out-state entities and organizations, but we've always been a big support to them, because it's hard to bring five or ten people together when you're in a very small community."

Woosley says Eager-to-Learn offers a wide range of courses, focusing on children from birth to age 12. The classes include information about licensing requirements, diversity and culture, and training on SIDS and shaken-baby syndrome.

"We also meet needs that are more unique to providers, such as with the rise of autism in Minnesota: we have a great selection of courses on Asperger's and recognizing developmental delays in children."

Woosley also says these courses can be a stepping-stone for child care providers who want to pursue higher education. Studies have shown the well-being and school readiness of children is dependent in part on their caregivers' skills and level of education.
