McKinley's Tax Votes Prompt a Different Kind of "Donation Check"

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A group of West Virginia citizens is delivering a huge check today to U.S. Rep. David McKinley's Morgantown office - and it isn't a campaign donation.

McKinley, R-W.Va., voted with other House Republicans to continue the tax cuts for the wealthy passed under President George W. Bush. McKinley also followed a party-line vote against extending those Bush tax cuts for only the middle class.

Lisa Diehl of Ritchie County says that's why she and others are presenting McKinley's office with a fake check for $160,000. She says that amount represents the average tax break for those making $1 million a year or more.

"Rep. McKinley has spent a lot of time protecting millionaires, and not too much time working for the middle class."

McKinley did not return a phone call requesting comment.

McKinley largely has voted with the Republican House leadership on tax bills. One bill he voted for would have cut the child tax credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit for 25 million low-income working families. In a separate vote, McKinley opposed a Senate proposal to end tax cuts for the wealthy but extend them for those for making less.

Diehl believes these votes have made McKinley's priorities clear.

"The U.S. House rejected a middle-class tax cut bill already approved by the Senate that would have benefited 98 percent of Americans. Rep. McKinley is really not being a champion for the middle class, but rather a champion for the 2 percent."

According to federal records, McKinley has raised $1.8 million for his campaign - slightly more than $1 million of which are large individual donations including many from people who would benefit from the tax breaks.

The protest is to start at noon at McKinley's office in the Seneca Center, 709 Beechurst Ave., Suite 14B, Morgantown.
