NEW YORK - The candidates for president had their say on foreign policy last night, and today local AARP-Connecticut volunteers are letting current and would-be members of the state congressional delegation know how Nutmeggers feel about issues closer to home. AARP-CT State Director Nora Duncan calls the response "pretty overwhelming" from some 10,000 Connecticut residents of all ages, who she says voiced especially strong feelings about the future of Medicare.

"Three-quarters of Connecticut residents who responded to our questionnaire - 78 percent - believe that all future retirees should continue to get the same guaranteed coverage that seniors get currently."

Duncan said 67 percent of locals who responded want to see a balanced approach of benefit and revenue changes to make sure Social Security is there for future retirees. Many feel Washington is not listening, Duncan says, and that is why these "You've Earned a Say" reports are so valuable.

Across party lines, folks in Connecticut said they believe both Medicare and Social Security are critical for both health and retirement security, Duncan says.

"People are worried about not only themselves but their children, their grandchildren; folks like me who don't have kids and aren't anywhere near retirement are worried about themselves and what it means for people coming up behind us."

President Obama and Republican hopeful Mitt Romney already have copies of the national survey findings, and this week Duncan says AARP is delivering the local numbers to members of Connecticut's Congressional delegation and candidates for their seats.

"We're using this data to tell them this isn't just about the sound bites that you use in your campaign. This is for real people. It has real meaning."

Duncan says local voters can also get involved in upcoming congressional candidate forums in Waterbury on Oct. 29 and Bridgeport on Nov. 2.
