CONCORD, N.H. - The search is on for those select few in New Hampshire who actually get a kick out of preparing tax returns - especially if it gets Granite Starters a refund they need and deserve.

Jan Nedelka is a Tax-Aide volunteer with AARP-New Hampshire who is leading the search for volunteers. Last year, he says, Tax-Aide volunteers not only helped local folks who deserved a refund but also helped the local economy.

"We helped over 11,000 people prepare their tax returns and put over $12 million in refunds to which they were entitled onto the streets of the towns and communities of New Hampshire."

Nedelka says the search is on now for volunteers who, beginning early next year, will provide free assistance at 50 Tax-Aide Sites across the Granite State.

Nedelka says they rounded up more than 350 local volunteers last year.

"Right now is prime time for people who are interested in volunteering with us to come forward; there are people who enjoy doing taxes, it's very satisfying to fill out the forms and make sure everything lines up - and it's incredibly rewarding to help our clients."

By mid-January, these volunteers will be fully trained, and starting February 1st, Nedelka says, people of all ages across New Hampshire can get help.

"Generally, if you would consider yourself anywhere from lower income to the middle class, we'll help you prepare you taxes - and we do it for free."

He says volunteers benefit by learning new skills while giving back to their neighbors.
