Learning to Eat Healthy

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - National Eating Healthy Day is Nov. 7, and to help celebrate, the American Heart Association of South Dakota is holding two cooking demonstrations.

Chrissy Meyers, a spokeswoman for the association, says many Americans don't eat as well as they should.

"We know that poor eating habits also place you at risk for heart disease and stroke, so we are trying to tackle that problem with cooking demonstrations in celebration of National Eating Healthy Day on Nov. 7."

Meyers says both demonstrations will have chefs on hand to show how to make healthy meals quickly. The association has partnered with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council to help with meal planning, she says.

"A lot of people have this misperception that if you're going to eat heart healthy, it's got to be food that doesn't taste good. We want to educate people and let them know that, no, you can eat heart-healthy beef, you can eat some wonderful things, and we are going to show you how to prepare some really fantastic beef recipes. We are going to do an appetizer and an entree, and teach you how to enjoy beef on your holiday table this year."

If people can learn how to easily prepare meals at home, Meyers says, they end up making better food decisions.

"People who are taught how to prepare nutritious meals use those skills and then they share them with others. We also know if you are cooking at home you're going to tend to make more nutritious choices. So, you are going to, maybe, use healthier ingredients. You're going to know where those ingredients come from. You'll just make better decisions all around."

The events will be held Saturday at Rushmore Mall in Rapid City and on Nov. 10 at Strawbale Winery in Sioux Falls. Registration information is online at heart.org/southdakota.
