Tax Filing Deadline Just Days Away

DES MOINES, Iowa – The deadline for filing your federal income tax return is quickly approaching.

And Elmer Neussendorfer, AARP Iowa Tax Aide State Volunteer Coordinator, says you can't afford to dilly dally any longer, especially if you're not figuring out your taxes on your own.

"You need to gather all your papers together and last year's return, and go find someone to do your taxes for you,” he says. “And that is getting harder and harder to do right now because a lot of people only take appointments and they are booked up already."

Neussendorfer says if you meet certain income guidelines, there are free tax preparation services, like the one he operates for the AARP Foundation. You can find free tax preparation sites at AARP.org.

Even with the deadline looming, there's no need to panic – just keep in mind filing has to be done even if you don't have all the paperwork in order.

"We could put an extension in or we could file the return as is,” Neussendorfer says. “And if you find the right papers later on, we could do an amended return."

Neussendorfer estimates the Iowa Tax-Aide program operated by AARP has helped 6,000 Iowans prepare their returns this year, and services are available right up until the filing deadline.
