Survey: IL Seniors Want No Part of Obama's Budget Compromise

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - President Obama unveils his budget compromise to Congress Wednesday, and has said he's willing to consider compromising on Social Security, but older voters in Illinois and around the nation want no part of it.

According to Gerardo Cardenas with AARP, a new survey by his organization finds nearly 90 percent of older voters don't want Obama to put Social Security on the table at all.

"Illinois voters 50 and older don't want Social Security to be a part of any conversation related to budget reduction, because it wasn't Social Security who created the budget deficit," Cardenas declared.

The president has said he's willing to consider the so-called "chained CPI (Consumer Price Index)" which changes the way cost-of-living adjustments are calculated, in a manner that would reduce them. AARP analysts say that because the chained CPI compounds over time, it would end up cutting one full month of benefits each year from a 92-year-old recipient.

Cardenas, who is Senior Manager of Communications at AARP Illinois, recalled Obama promising in 2008 not to compromise on Social Security.

"And all of a sudden he seems to change his mind, and what we're saying is that he needs to show real leadership and stand up for seniors," Cardenas stated.

The survey found 70 percent of Illinois voters 50 and older - the majority of Republicans, Democrats and independents - opposed to changing the way the Consumer Price Index is calculated. Obama is expected to include the chained CPI as a bargaining chip to try to convince Republican leaders to accept tax increases.
