MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho - The entry to Mountain Home Air Force Base is lined with 200 blue and silver pinwheels. The toys mark National Child Abuse Prevention Month - and represent the 200 babies born at the base last year.

Connie Powers, family advocacy outreach manager for the 366th Medical Operations Squadron, said the unit offers parenting classes to first-time fathers - buoyed by research that shows that fathers involved during the pregnancy are more likely to be positively involved with their children for years to come.

"With our high deployment rate, it's good to have dads as involved as they can be," Powers said. "Most dads find it really beneficial."

A new parenting class offered this year focuses on preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome, Powers said. Those in the class are handed a crying doll and told to shake it until it stops crying. The doll's head then lights up to show where brain damage would likely occur, and Powers points out that it doesn't take much action to cause damage.

"That's a good way to think in your head how you can take some classes, learn how to take care of yourself, to prevent you shaking a baby," she said.

The Idaho Children's Trust Fund provides the pinwheels, which are a national symbol for child-abuse prevention.
