Meet "Wade," The Heron on Your License Plate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The iconic great blue heron on Maryland's "Treasure the Chesapeake" license plate finally has a name: Wade.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust received more than 500 entries in its "name our bird" contest. Kristin Foringer, communications and development manager for the trust, said Wade was the overwhelming winner.

"We think that it represents what the blue heron does," she said. "He wades into the water and looks for delicious food that the bay provides."

The license plates cost $20 and fund bay restoration and education projects.

Foringer said Megan Flickinger of Frederick came up with the winning name.

"She's very passionate about the bay and protecting it," Foringer said, "and she knows how important it is to her community, even all the way out in Frederick."

For her winning name, Flickinger received a $100 Southwest Airlines voucher and, of course, a free Treasure the Chesapeake plate.
