Bipartisan NH Budget Restores “Critical” Funding

CONCORD, N.H. – Supporters are giving the governor credit for getting both parties to support a new state budget that they say restores critical programs.

State Sen. David Pierce says Gov. Maggie Hassan should be applauded for her efforts to get state lawmakers to approve a state budget that increases aid to cities and focuses on key issues such as higher education and health care.

"The budget does restore funding for the University College system, strengthens health services in our state and it restores the CHINS program, the Children in Need of Services program,” Pierce says."

He adds the budget will also add more state troopers to many communities. The New Hampshire state Senate gave unanimous approval to the budget and, Pierce says, there was only token opposition in the House.

Pierce says it has been a long time coming, but is still good to see so much bipartisan cooperation at the state Capitol.

His district includes Hanover, Claremont and Lebanon.

Pierce says he hopes to be called back to work in October by the governor. A commission is due to report back on expanding Medicaid to 58,000 New Hampshire residents who don't have health insurance. He says the legislature will need to take a vote.

"A federal grant of $2.5 billion coming into our state,” Pierce points out. “You know, we're still paying Medicaid taxes whether we get Medicaid expansion or not. So, if we don't take Medicaid expansion that means we are subsidizing Medicaid for Massachusetts, for Maine, Vermont – for all over the country."

Pierce says there are also important infrastructure issues to be dealt with, such as funding local highway projects, which can boost both employment and the local economy.

Gov. Hassan is expected to sign the budget today.
