ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Just in time for Fourth of July travel, it's getting more expensive to drive in Maryland. The gas tax rate goes up today, raising the tax from about 23.5 cents to 27 cents a gallon.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic public affairs specialist Jeanette Tejada de Gomez, it's mixed news for Marylanders.

"The impact is the gas rate will go up, but the benefit to Maryland is that the state will have money for transportation projects and will be able to fund those projects well into the future," she said.

Tolls on state roads, bridges and tunnels also go up today. It will now cost $6 to cross the Bay Bridge, up from $4.

While Maryland's gas tax rate is increasing, Virginia is decreasing its tax from about 17.5 cents to 12 cents a gallon, starting today. Triple-A's Tejada de Gomez said that could affect where drivers choose to fuel up.

"So, I think, with the lower gas tax coming in Virginia, more people will go to Virginia to get a lower gas tax rate."

Maryland also plans to use money from the tax increase to boost alternative transportation, including the proposed Purple Line on the rail system linking Bethesda and New Carrollton.
