ST. PAUL, Minn. - After the long, cool spring, mosquitoes in Minnesota are trying to make up for lost time as the Fourth of July approaches.

The wet weather of previous weeks has provided breeding ground for those that breed in containers, said Mike McLean, public information officer for the Metropolitan Mosquito District. He said it's also meant that mosquito eggs laid long ago near what were receding bodies of water have been dormant until now - and they're hatching.

"As you can imagine, we're getting a lot of mosquito development that's coming from eggs that have been laid during dry times over the past several years," he said, "We're literally, maybe, getting two or three years' worth of mosquitoes all developing at once."

About 50 species of mosquitoes call Minnesota home.

McLean said repellents that contain DEET are most effective, although there are other options.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "has kind of given the thumbs-up on products that contain oil of lemon eucalyptus," he said, "and mosquito repellents that have a substance called Picaridin in it are also effective."

McLean advised against "home-remedy" repellents, adding that while some may work for some people, everyone's attractiveness to mosquitoes is different.
