Human Face on Hunger Fight in NV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - It's a nationally acclaimed documentary about hunger in Nevada and the nation, and tonight it will hit the big screen in Sparks. Nevadans will get their first chance to see "A Place at the Table," and Jocelyn Lantrip, Food Bank of Northern Nevada spokesperson, said the documentary puts a human face on the struggle to put enough food on the table to fight off hunger for adults and children.

The film hits home because it puts the spotlight on real families, Lantrip said.

"It shows you three really specific stories of hunger. They feel like they're alone when they're clearly not: We have one in five people in the State of Nevada who are facing hunger," she said.

The screening of the documentary is especially timely after Congress failed to pass the Farm Bill, she said, adding that many Nevadans may not connect that measure as the major source of funding for food stamp benefits, which are now called SNAP.

"I suspect that many people do not know, really, what's at stake for Nevadans, for people across the country. We know that half of all food-stamp or SNAP benefits go to help children, and quite a few children need help right here in Nevada."

Tonight's screening will take place at the Summit Christian Church, Sparks, starting at 6 p.m.
A second screening is scheduled at Microsoft Licensing, Reno, on July 24. Space is limited for both screenings. Seats may be reserved by contacting the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, www.FBNN.org.

Hunger statistics are available at http://frac.org.
