“Tanks-a-Lot” Could Mean Free Gas for WI Flex-Fuel Vehicle Owners

BROOKFIELD, Wis. - Wisconsinites who drive a flex-fuel vehicle could get a free fill-up because of the Wisconsin Clean Air Choice program's "Tanks-a-Lot" promotion.

"We thought it would be nice to recognize the people who actually use E85 on a regular basis," said Jerry Medinger, manager of the Clean Fuels and Vehicle Technology Program for the American Lung Association in Wisconsin. "Just kind of show up at a gas station and when somebody is buying E85 we'll step in and buy the tank of fuel for them, as a way of saying thank you for using it."

The promotion starts today and will run through fall.

It will be easy to spot the Clean Air Choice team when they're at a gas station in your neighborhood," Medinger said.

"We have a 2011 flex-fuel Chevy Impala that's brightly colored in red, white and blue," he said. "On the side of the vehicle it says 'red, white, and blue - and clean' as a reference to E85."

The team will give clues to its whereabouts on its Facebook page, which you can find by searching "Clean Air Choice Team." Medinger said the object of the promotion is to draw attention to the benefits of E85, which he calls a home-grown fuel that has benefits for Wisconsin's economy and helps keep our air cleaner.

Buying a flex-fuel vehicle is a smart choice for many reasons, Medinger said.

"When you have a choice of fuels to buy I think that's where consumers always come out ahead," Medinger said. "You can make the decision of what fuel to use when. The flex-fuel vehicle gives you that option. You can use E85 if it's available and it meets your needs, but you don't have to."

A quarter-million flex-fuel vehicles in Wisconsin can use E85, and Medinger said Wisconsin is the second-leading exporter of ethanol, the main component of E85.
