Librarians Come to the Rescue

Thursday, August 8, 2013

HARTFORD, Conn. - The state's librarians are jumping in to help the public understand how "Access Health CT" will work. That's the state's official health insurance marketplace, one of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

Jennifer Keohane, executive director of the Connecticut Library Consortium, said her group is collaborating with the Universal Healthcare Foundation of Connecticut "to put together training that will enable librarians to understand the big picture, the details enough, and have a credible collection of resources that they can send their patrons to."

The open enrollment period for Access Health CT begins Oct. 1.

As Republicans in Congress still are trying to repeal Obamacare, Keohane said librarians need the background to better understand the conflicting story lines.

"They want to know more about the data that supports the statements that are being made because we know we'll be challenged on that," she said, "and that's actually our role."

She said librarians are working on another angle, too.

"The second part that we're working on is more about the role of public libraries as a place where people have community discussion about societal changes in general," she said, "and that's sort of our role, kind of the town green."

Keohane said the consortium will present showings at libraries around the state of a film called "Escape Fire" about the health-care crisis, and also provide copies for patrons to borrow.
