EVERGREEN, Colo. – It's not uncommon for people to lace up their sneakers to raise money for a worthy cause, but this is the first time people in Colorado can dig out their hiking boots and enjoy Three Sisters and The Brother Peaks to help folks with HIV or AIDS.

The Hike to HEAL will take place Sept. 21 in Evergreen – the goal is to raise money and provide support for a disease that has moved out of the public eye recently.

Rhonda Dern, founder of the first-time event, says her work as a home health nurse showed her those in urban areas have more access to care.

"In rural areas people don't have all the connections that they do to get support,” she explains. “If you get people walking, that are either infected or affected by HIV, you see that we're all the same."

Registered hikers will trek the 2.8 mile course from Alderfer-Three Sisters to The Brother peak, which takes about two hours, or there is an easy meadow walk available.

Registration is $30 and can be done on the day of the event or by contacting the Center for Church and Global AIDS.

Rev. Joshua Love, founding pastor of the Church of Uncommon Hope, has been living with HIV for 12 years. He says he's hiking to help those who may not have the support he's found.

"But just because I'm healthy, it doesn't mean that I'm not responsible then to the person who is struggling, who doesn't have access to medication, who doesn't have the information that they need,” he adds “My responsibility doesn't end with me."

Dern says her eyes were opened by a cousin, who's living with HIV.

"You know it's just a virus like a cold, like hepatitis,” she explains. “This virus happens to like the body fluids involved with making love, so people don't want to talk about it, people don't want to give to it."

Dern says HEAL stands for Help Eliminate AIDS in our Lifetime and plans for the event to expand to other cities and states in future years.
