DES MOINES, Iowa - Social Security is not just a benefit that older Iowans have worked their whole lives for, it's also a major engine of economic growth, according to a new study from the AARP Public Policy Institute. Kent Sovern, state director, AARP of Iowa, said the study found that Social Security contributed $13.5 billion in total economic output in the state in 2012.

"For every dollar of Social Security benefits paid in Iowa, it returns to the economy about $1.74, which means that it supports a great many jobs, pays for people's salaries, and of course there's the attendant benefit of local and state tax revenues," Sovern said.

When it comes to employment, the analysis found that Social Security helps support nearly 100,000 jobs in Iowa. Nationwide, Social Security supports around 9 million jobs.

Because of Social Security's role in the economy locally and across the country, Sovern said, AARP of Iowa has been visiting all members of the state's Congressional delegation this week, advising them that if there need to be changes, they should be considered separately from the debate over the country's financial issues.

"We're encouraging them to reach a resolution that ends this slowdown, showdown, shutdown - whatever word you want to use - and protects Social Security and Medicare, keeps them out of the discussions until a future date," he said.

The full report, "Social Security's Impact on the National Economy," is available at http://www.aarp.org.
