Program Offers Support, Companionship for CO's LGBT Citizens

DENVER - For Colorado seniors, finding companionship and support can be tough, and particularly for those in the gay, lesbian and transgender community. The poverty rate for LGBT older adults can be twice as high as for their heterosexual peers, according to the advocacy organization Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE). Many seek help and fellowship from the GLBT Community Center of Colorado.

According to Mindy Barton, legal director at The Center, seniors in the LGBT community face additional challenges as they age.

"Ageism is definitely something that they would face and then this question of identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender can also have a huge impact on those individuals," she said.

Barton said seniors are also trying to navigate through changes in laws brought about by the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8. The Center offers the SAGE of the Rockies program to help provide support.

Carol Weiser, 74, and her wife Judy met through the SAGE of the Rockies program. They married last Saturday in San Francisco. Weiser said her partnership really adds to her quality of life.

"It's nice to know that there's someone there at your back all the time and someone to do things with and enjoy each others' company, whether we're out or we're at home," she said. "It's just a pleasure."

At 73, Judy Pflum said that knowing she and Carol now have legal rights and the ability to file taxes together is comforting.

"Well, it means you can be who you are," she said. "For once, we are really treated like real people instead of paying taxes and Social Security and getting half the benefits - if that."

According to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the number of elder LGBT adults will double by 2030. Report authors point out that the LGBT baby boomers now reaching retirement age are the first "out" generation of older adults in the nation's history, meaning it is more socially acceptable for them to declare their sexual orientation publicly, compared with previous generations.
