Thursday, October 24, 2013

GARDEN CITY, Idaho - Today, Lt. Gov. Brad Little will proclaim October as "Hunger and Food Security Awareness Month" in Idaho. The focus is on children this year, as well as on nutrition education for everyone.

Kathy Gardner, director, Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force, said it surprises people when they learn how many children in the Gem State experience living situations where a meal is not a sure thing.

"We still have a pretty dire situation. We have 23 percent of Idaho children who are food insecure, and that's well over 96,000 children," Gardner said.

She said six counties in Idaho have child poverty rates between 28 and 36 percent - and poverty is directly connected to hunger. Idaho is taking action, and programs through the University of Idaho and the Boys and Girls Clubs will be highlighted today.

Jennifer Auemeir is nutrition director at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ada County. They serve 300 dinners to families every day, and about double that number in after-school snacks. But they don't just make sure foods get into families' hands. They also educate about making smart food choices - and local food choices, when possible.

"Our staff are trained as nutritional superheroes," Auemeir said. "When they're done serving, they go out with kids and talk about why they have spinach on their tostada instead of iceberg lettuce."

Aumeier said she researches all the food served to make sure it's readily available, so meals can be replicated at home.

The event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ada County, Moseley Center, 610 E. 42nd St., Garden City.
