NM Senator Udall: "No SNAP Cuts"

SANTA FE, N.M. - Stopping massive budget cuts to the SNAP program - often called food stamps - is a goal of Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M.

Udall is among almost 40 senators calling on both houses of Congress to stop all proposed funding cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is usually part of the Farm Bill debate. Udall communications director Jennifer Talhelm said the funding cuts would devastate New Mexico.

"Very very damaging to low-income families around the country," she said, "In New Mexico, 51 percent of those families are working families, so this is assistance that helps them get by. Over half of these families have children, and a lot of them are seniors as well."

The Senate voted this summer to cut more than $4 billion from the SNAP program. The House passed legislation last month to consider nutrition programs separately from the rest of the Farm Bill and reduce SNAP funding by $40 billion over 10 years. The two sides now are meeting to try to work out a compromise.

Melody Wattenbarger, president of the Road Runner Food Bank of New Mexico, said SNAP cuts would create an almost impossible situation for her agency, which already is barely keeping up with the lingering impact of the Great Recession.

"We saw a 46 percent increase in need as a result of the recession," Wattenbarger said. "And if these cuts were to go into effect, we would see even more elevated need."

She said the Road Runner Food Bank helps 40,000 people a week.
