Missourians to Rally For Immigration Reform

ST. LOUIS - In the wake of a 16-day partial government shutdown, a broad range of Missourians have said they have had enough partisan politics and are calling on lawmakers to bring comprehensive immigration reform to a vote in the U.S. House. The coalition includes labor organizations, faith groups, business leaders and advocates for immigrants and refugees.

Alison Dreith, St. Louis organizer for Missouri ProVote, is helping coordinate a pair of rallies on Friday. She said immigration reform should not be a partisan issue.

"No matter what side of the aisle you stand on, this is an economic issue, this is a moral issue and a family issue," Dreith said.

The groups plan to rally outside Rep. Ann Wagner's office in Ballwin at 9 a.m. Friday, then at Rep. Blaine Leutkemeyer's office in Jefferson City at 1 p.m.

Supporters of the legislation, which would create a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants who entered the country illegally, contend that there are enough votes to pass the bill in the House. Given that the Senate passed its immigration bill in June, Dreith said this is a critical moment in our nation's history.

"At a time where our country is more divided, they really have the opportunity to bring the country back together on this one issue," she explained.

While many House Republicans oppose the comprehensive bill, House Speaker John Boehner has said he still feels that immigration reform is an important subject that needs to be addressed, and has suggested passing the bill in bits and pieces.
