Planning Ahead for Heart-Healthy Holidays

RENNER, S.D. – For many people, the holidays bring fun, family and food together.

And it can be especially difficult to stay on a healthy course during the last couple months of the year. But it isn't impossible.

Chrissy Meyer with the American Heart Association of South Dakota says there are ways for people to enjoy the time, and still keep their heart health in mind.

"This is kind of the official, unofficial kickoff to the holiday season here, in the month of November,” she says. “It's kind of a reminder to people that obviously, one of the best things about the holidays are the foods – but there is a way you can enjoy your favorite holiday foods and also maybe eat a little bit healthier over the holiday season as well."

Meyer says the Heart Association has all kinds of healthy eating tips on its website, heart.org, and now is the time to start planning those holiday eating strategies.

A cooking demonstration is coming up this Saturday to show people how easy it can be to eat smart and eat well at the same time. Meyer says many people think a heart-healthy diet means no red meat, but she says that isn't the case.

"There are more than 30 cuts of lean beef that are approved by the American Heart Association as part of a heart-healthy diet,” she points out. “And so, we're partnering with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council to do this cooking demonstration, and demonstrate a couple fantastic beef recipes that you can put on your holiday table this season."

Meyer adds the cooking demonstration will be held Saturday afternoon at Strawbale Winery near Renner.

"It's totally free, open to the public,” she says. “All we ask is that you register online ahead of time, just so that we know how many samples to prepare. So, you can register online at heart.org/southdakota."
