CALDWELL, Idaho - Papers are being signed to seal "forever families" for 18 children in Canyon County today. It's a National Adoption Day Celebration, designed to encourage families to think about making room for one, or two, more.

Canyon County Trial Court Administrator Dan Kessler is all for the idea.

"You know, this is one of the few really enjoyable things that happen in courts," he declared. "It's wonderful to be able to give these kids homes and celebrate that."

Adoptive families of years past will be on hand to congratulate the new families.

About 1,300 Idaho children are in the foster care system each year. Some will return to their families, but Kessler said hundreds need permanent homes. He added that one of the most important aspects is helping older kids become successful adults, and that can be difficult when children "age out" of the foster system.

"I say God bless foster parents, but it's not a permanent solution for the kid."

There is a similar celebration in Boise next week.

Families interested in adopting or fostering can call the Idaho CareLine at 211.

The celebration is at noon at the Canyon County Courthouse, Caldwell.
