ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A new big-money advertising campaign in New Mexico is aimed at letting people know they can sign up for health insurance coverage as part of the Affordable Care Act.

Millions of dollars are being spent on radio, television, newspaper and social media, said Mike Nunez, executive director of the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange, adding that the goal is to let the public know about the affordable health insurance policies now available.

The ads started earlier this month, Nunez said, and so far the feedback seems strong.

"We've had 127,000 unique visitors go through our website looking to get to healthcare.gov, so there's lots of interest."

The number of phone calls to his office also has doubled in the past month, Nunez said. The New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange serves as a portal to healthcare.gov, the federal website where individuals purchase health insurance. However, businesses in New Mexico buy their health insurance through the state health exchange.

Nunez predicted that the ACA should be a big hit in New Mexico, which has among the nation's highest rates of uninsured residents.

"We're second highest percentage of uninsured in the country," he said, "so we have a tremendous opportunity to benefit from this."

So far, Nunez said, less than 1,000 ACA insurance policies have been sold. He's hoping the advertising campaign and more awareness that the healthcare.gov website is working more efficiently will increase business.
