Tesla Supercharging Stations May Help NM Tourism

FARMINGTON, N.M. - New Mexico's tourism economy could get a boost in the new year, courtesy of Tesla Motors. The maker of the popular electric vehicle is placing supercharging stations in Farmington and Gallup.

Ray Hagerman, CEO, Four Corners Economic Development, said Tesla strategically locates the stations in areas close to tourism hot spots. He said he hopes the Tesla owners will spend some money while waiting for their vehicles to charge.

"People plug in and they charge. An hour later, the charge is done. The idea is that it's within walking distance to go to dinner or go do some shopping and wait for the charge to get done," Hagerman said.

The Gallup recharging station is open and the one in Farmington should be operating in January, he explained, pointing out that tourist attractions in the area include national monuments, world-class fly-fishing, and skiing in nearby Durango, Colo.

According to Tesla's website, there are nearly 50 supercharging stations in the U.S., located in cities along well-traveled highways. The company said the Tesla Model S can get a half-charge within 20 minutes and can travel 300 miles on a single charge.

Another huge savings for electric car owners is the low cost - and in the case of Tesla, no cost - for refueling, Hagerman said.

"That's one of the benefits of being a Tesla owner," he said. "If you use Tesla supercharging stations, you never have to pay another nickel for fuel."

With some Tesla vehicles priced at over $100,000, Hagerman said people driving them into the area probably would have extra money to spend at local retailers.
