SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Tax time doesn't have to be a stressful time for Illinoisans.

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are ready to crunch the numbers and help low to moderate-income individuals file their federal, state and local income tax returns for free.

Gerardo Cardenas, communications manager for AARP Illinois, says the program has been in place for more than 40 years and offers services in nearly 1,200 locations around the state.

"Just in 2013 we helped nearly 80,000 Illinoisans who received over $41 million in income tax refunds," he relates.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is the largest volunteer tax service in the country, and last year helped more than 2.6 million Americans get about $1.3 billion in income tax refunds.

The program begins Feb. 2 and runs through April 15.

Cardenas says AARP’s goal is to help those who cannot afford a private tax preparation service or accountant.

"Certainly with the bad economy we had over the last few years there's been an uptick in the number of people in Illinois and across the nation who have come searching for our services," he says.

The service is offered to taxpayers of all ages, and you do not need to be a member of AARP.

Cardenas adds it's important for Illinoisans to know that AARP’s volunteers are trained and experienced in filing basic tax returns.

"The Tax-Aide program is offered in conjunction with the IRS and all our volunteers who work tirelessly, they are IRS certified,” he explains. “So when you come to a Tax-Aide site and you file your tax return, you need to know that they're done right."
