Illinois Business Leaders Join Forces on Immigration Reform

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Dozens of top business leaders in Illinois are joining forces to call for action on immigration reform this year. At an event this week at DePaul University, former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Cardinal Francis George joined the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition in urging the Illinois delegation to support reforms that will provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

Dave Bender is the executive director of the American Council of Engineers Companies of Illinois and co-chair of the coalition.

"If we have a system set up that is not treating people like second-class citizens, that is free of as much red tape as possible," Bender said, "we will create an environment here for people to come and be productive entrepreneurs, productive citizens."

Reforms are needed that will advance the state's competitiveness, create job growth and provide solutions for integrating undocumented immigrants into the community and economy, Bender added.

Last week, House Speaker John Boehner unveiled the Republican plan for immigration reform, and President Obama spoke about immigration in his State of the Union address. Bender said it is critical to have both sides of the aisle working together.

"It's great to have a healthy debate, and I think we've had that, but now it is time to move on and help our country build and help our country become great again. Now we are asking for both parties to sit down and work," Bender said.

Immigration can help jump-start the Illinois economy, he said, adding that the state and the nation work best when we can remain globally competitive.

"Unless we can attract the best and brightest in our workforce as well as our higher education institutions, we're just never going to have that competitive edge," he said, "because we are losing each year that comprehensive reform is not passed."

According to the American Action Network, immigration reform would create 105,000 jobs in Illinois and boost the state's economic output by $1.8 billion.
