ST. LOUIS – Students at one Missouri high school hope a video they produced will give lawmakers a lesson on how the students’ priorities line up with those of the federal budget.

Rashaid Warren, a senior at Northwest Academy of Law High School in St. Louis, says he was shocked to find out that only 3 percent of the federal budget, or roughly $170 million, goes toward education, compared with $1 trillion in military spending.

"It didn't sit right with me because I believe that we're worth a trillion dollars also, and our education is worth a trillion dollars also," he says.

Warren and his classmates produced a video, entitled “Education Is the Key to Our Success,” which now is a finalist in the American Friends Service Committee's Youth Film Festival.

All the videos can be seen at IHTD.org.

The contest asked students, if they had the power to choose, how would they spend $1 trillion?

Warren says he felt it was important to focus on education, because he sees it as the cornerstone of society.

"Jobs and better futures for not just young people but also other people coming up,” he says. “Even adults, if they want to go back to school.

“It's all about making the people better, in my eyes."

The entries in the film festival will be screened and judged next month at the American Friends Service Committee's annual youth leadership conference in Washington.

Warren and his fellow producers are raising funds in the hopes of attending.
