SANTA FE, N.M. - New Mexico is hoping that simplifying its online business processes will help make the state more competitive in attracting business. During this year's legislative session, Representative Lucky Varela was the House sponsor of Senate Bill 9, "The One-Stop Business Portal Act," which the governor has since signed into law.

According to Varela, it will enable business people to access state services through a single website.

"This portal would enable you to click on directly to whatever department you need to, for whatever purpose you need," he said. "If it's for paying your taxes, getting a license."

He added that the website should be in operation next year.

Varela said it's part of the Legislature's ongoing effort to try and make New Mexico more competitive with neighboring states in attracting business and industry. He pointed to laws resulting from last year's legislative session which cut corporate taxes and created tax incentives for the film industry.

This year, he said, the state is focused on winning the battle with Arizona, Nevada and Texas to get Tesla Motors to build its proposed multi-billion dollar electric car battery plant in New Mexico.

"The climate is good for that," the lawmaker said. "I just hope that we are able to attract that particular business."

Tesla Motors is considering New Mexico as a possible site for its lithium-ion battery plant. The company says it could be a $5 billion project and employ more than 6000 workers.
