EAST LANSING, Mich. - It's March Madness of another sort. With just days to go until the enrollment deadline under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the push is on to connect young Michiganders with health insurance.

Andreea Prundeanu, 29, is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University who has only been able to afford sporadic health coverage for past few years. She said she was skeptical the ACA would be any different, but with financial assistance, her premium is now less than $6 per month for a high-quality plan.

"I am a fairly healthy young adult, but things can always happen, and getting this insurance plan through the marketplace just finally brought huge relief," Prundeanu said.

The deadline for purchasing insurance for this sign-up period is Monday, March 31. Information is at www.HealthCare.gov.

Prundeanu said she knows many people her age have a sense of invincibility, but she hopes they will at least take the time to consider their options as closely as many considered their basketball brackets.

"Our health is our most important asset," she said, "and it needs to be something that we are proactive about and something we protect. Now is the time; we have this great opportunity."

According to the latest data, at least 145,000 Michiganders have purchased health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and 87 percent of them received some form of financial assistance.

More information is available at www.HealthCare.gov.
