CASPER, Wyo. - Today is the deadline for most eligible Wyomingites to begin their sign-up for coverage in the health-insurance marketplace, www.HealthCare.gov.
About 7,000 already have enrolled.

Jan Cartwright, director of health policy, Wyoming Primary Care Association, said Navigators will be standing by to help with last-minute details. She added that more than 90 percent of Wyoming residents who have purchased coverage have qualified for financial assistance.

"People are much more interested and engaged in the conversation once some of the myths have been swept away, and they really do see what is being offered to them," Cartwright said.

Enrollment does not have to be finalized for two more weeks, as long as the process begins by midnight tonight. Married victims of domestic violence have until May 31, because of recent tax-code changes. Native Americans do not face the same deadlines, and may be exempt from the coverage requirement in certain instances.

Cartwright said while she has heard many stories of how people appreciate being able to purchase affordable coverage, not every situation has that "happy ending."

"Some people made a little too much money to get subsidies," she said, "or weren't eligible because they didn't make enough money and we haven't expanded Medicaid."

The Wyoming Legislature did agree to study the Medicaid option. If the state accepts the federal money to extend health coverage, about 18,000 more Wyomingites could obtain insurance.

Enrollment can be done in person, over the phone by calling 211, or online at www.HealthCare.gov.
