LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Individuals and groups in Nevada are calling on state lawmakers to help the Silver State sharpen its focus on energy efficiency. Clean energy advocate Levon Budding is among those testifying before the legislature's Interim Committee on Energy today.

According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, between 2008 and 2013 Nevada's ranking for energy efficiency fell from 15th in the U.S. to 33rd. Budding said legislators need to help reverse that trend.

"What we're doing right now is asking people if they support it," Budding said. "And that's, in a way, gathering that voice to bring to the state legislature."

He predicted activists will deliver more than 1,500 petitions, along with more than 50 handwritten letters, to the energy committee, including a letter from a business coalition supporting smarter energy use.

Budding listed plenty of ways to cut down on energy costs in the average home.

"There's all kinds of things around your place that are super easy and simple to fix, like unplugging your cell phone charger from the wall when you're not using it. Plugging your television, your Wi-Fi, your modem and router into a power strip, and switching that off," he suggested.

Reducing energy consumption through weatherizing also can help create local jobs in the green construction industry, he noted, while saving families and businesses money on their utility bills.

The legislative meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Grant Sawyer Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Las Vegas.
