Mission Energy: Reliable Transmission Across Southern Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. - To meet the growing energy needs in the state, the construction of a new transmission line in southern Minnesota is moving forward and residents will soon get a chance to weigh in on the project. According to Lu Nelsen, energy program associate at the Center for Rural Affairs, comments on the Minnesota-Iowa line will be taken at hearings later this month in Fairmont, Jackson and Blue Earth.

"One of the easiest ways for transmission developers to actually learn about what is important to communities is for those community members to actually show up and air their concerns, make sure that all their concerns they have are being addressed and to make sure that they are identifying places that they think need certain protections," he said.

In addition to comments on the environmental impact, Nelsen said, other meetings will be held at a later time on the routing permit for the line.

"We do transmission siting pretty well in the Midwest, because we have these regulations that provide these meetings for the public to attend and share their concerns and learn a little bit about the line as well," he said.

Once complete, the Minnesota-Iowa transmission project will run from Lakefield Junction to the Winnebago area, before heading south to Iowa. Nelson said it's one of several multi-value projects in the region that will help increase reliability and provide new pathways for renewable energy.

Meetings are at 1 and 6 p.m. at Fairmont, April 22, Knights of Columbus Hall; at Jackson, April 23, National Guard Armory; and at Blue Earth, April 24, Hamilton Hall.
