ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Students across Michigan have tuned up their two-wheelers and strapped on their helmets for today's third annual Bike to School Day. Organizers say Michigan is a national leader in the push to promote healthier communities.

Led by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, Bike to School Day was launched in 2012 as an addition to the highly successful Walk to School Day which takes place each October. Center director Lauren Marchetti said the benefits of both are social as well as physical.

"Active transportation enables people to have a sense of community, get to know their neighborhood a little better, spend more quality time with each other," she said.

While many kids don't live in areas where it is feasible to walk or bike to school every day because of location, weather, and safety factors, Marchetti said events such as Bike to School Day do help to encourage more activity.

"Oftentimes it'll go to, 'Well, we're going to do this event once a month,' and then, 'We're going to do this event once a week.' And then, some places actually have competitions to see how many of the students, on a regular basis, can bike or walk to school," she said.

Some Michigan schools have found creative ways to participate, including designated meeting areas where students and families can congregate and form a short bike parade, or even offering "Bike at School" options during recess.

Roughly 150 Bike to School Day events are taking place across the state today, which Marchetti said puts Michigan in the top five states in the nation for participation. More information is online at WalkBikeToSchool.org.
