CARSON CITY, Nev. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada says passage of the immigration reform bill, now stalled in the Republican-controlled House, would benefit the economy in the Silver State and across the U.S.

Reid commented this week during National Travel and Tourism Week.

He said the immigration bill would increase international tourism.

"The Senate immigration bill would make it easier for tourists to come to America by increasing the number of Customs and Border Patrol agents who process international visitors,” he explained. “We hope that as tourists from foreign nations become more comfortable with traveling to the United States, they will do so more frequently."

Reid said about 20 percent of the 40 million tourists that visit Las Vegas each year are international visitors.

He added travel and tourism generated $45 billion in revenue for the Las Vegas economy, while employing nearly 400,000 Nevadans.

Reid said the Travel Promotion Act passed by Congress in 2010, which promotes America internationally, is generating a big economic return for a small investment.

"An independent analysis found that Brand USA helped generate more than 1 million new visitors to the United States,” Reid explained. “Those international visitors spent $3.4 billion last year.

“Increasing international tourism and visitation to the United States create jobs."

Reid added annually, travel and tourism boosted the U.S. economy by $2.1 2 trillion to the and accounted for about 15 million jobs.
