ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Several veterans are expected to be hired in a variety of industries today at the annual New Mexico Veterans Business Expo and Job Fair being held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Mike Schramski, the expo’s chairman, says the event includes vendors such as Sandia National Laboratories, as well as law enforcement agencies seeking to hire veterans.

"Last year we had approximately around 10 people that were hired on the spot,” he relates. “And we estimate that there were probably 20 or 30 veterans that were hired at a later date."

Schramski adds other businesses such as construction companies and Motel 6 will be on site at the expo, hoping to hire veterans.

He says veterans are known to be good employees because of their discipline and work ethic resulting from their military experience.

Schramski points out the expo also is a good opportunity for veterans to find employment where their military experience can be used in the civilian world.

"And then also they're looking for specific job titles,” he explains. “A military policeman in the military comes out and looking for a policeman's job, where they're already trained, or a fireman, or a heavy-equipment operator."

Schramski says the groups hosting the event include the New Mexico Veterans Business Advocates Group, and the city of Albuquerque.

He adds that this year's expo is at capacity with more than 140 vendors on site.
