Setting Sail Safely This Summer

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, safety leaders are offering some help for Illinois boaters to ensure they are ready to set sail safely this summer.

Today, Illinois Conservation Police will be at locations throughout the state performing free boat checks.

Spokesman Chris Young says no tickets will be written during these voluntary inspections.

"This is a courtesy check, just a chance for boaters to meet with a conservation officer in a low-pressure setting where we can talk and visit, get questions answered and fix any problems ahead of time, and that's really what we want," he explains.

Officers go through a checklist that includes working life jackets, fire extinguishers, navigation lights and battery covers. They also answer questions about registrations and titles.

Young says those who cannot attend a safety check today can always contact local law enforcement to try to arrange an appointment for an inspection.

Boating safety regulations and a list of locations for boat inspections are available online at dnr.illinois.gov.

Young says the most important way to stay safe when out on the water is to always wear a life jacket.

"If you wear it all the time, no matter what the conditions, even when you think you may not need it – it's just a good habit to be in because you never know when an accident might occur, when something might happen,” he says. “Usually an accident is an unexpected event and it catches people off guard."

Young also cautions boaters about the use of alcohol, and reminds Illinoisans to be responsible and safe when operating a motorized craft.
