Save Indiana's Ash Trees: Don't Move Firewood

INDIANAPOLIS - State leaders are asking residents to do their part to stop a pesky beetle from destroying ash trees in Indiana. The emerald ash borer feeds on wood, killing branches and entire trees.

State entomologist Phillip Marshall, a forest health specialist at the Department of Natural Resources, said the most important action people can take to stop the spread of the ash borer into new areas is to not transport firewood - between counties, or even from a home woodpile to a campsite.

This is the time of year when the bug tries to emerge and find a new tree to attack," Marshall said.

"Adults are starting to come out of infested trees, also infested firewood and move around, meet and find other trees to infest," he said. "So it's important - between now all the way through the rest of the summer, but especially now, through, and after the Fourth of July."

Currently, 84 counties in Indiana are under quarantine. The emerald ash borer is an invasive species, native to China and eastern Asia, but it's been found in Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, Illinois and Virginia. It was first detected in Indiana in 2004.

About 7 percent of Indiana's forests are ash trees, which puts about 147 million trees at risk, Marshall said.

"This insect is starting to remove this genus of trees from our natural resources, and we don't want that to happen," he said. "We've seen that happen with other exotic, invasive insect disease problems such as Dutch elm disease and American chestnut blight."

Hoosiers also are encouraged to report any suspected infestations to the Indiana DNR to keep track of the beetle's location. The toll-free hotline is 1-866 NO EXOTIC (1-866-663-9684).
