HARRISBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania may offer a look into the future of the political landscape in the wake of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's Virginia primary loss last week. More candidates are mounting campaigns independent of the major political parties.

Nick Troiano is an independent candidate for Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District. He accepts contributions from individuals, but not from corporations or political action committees.

"Our current political leaders are doing what's best for their party and their campaign contributors," said Troiano. "The election on Tuesday gave me greater confidence that anything is possible in politics. That people have the power, not the parties, not the big money. And that you just never know."

Troiano added that his candidacy and others like it could remedy the lack of productivity in Congress brought about by political division that, in many cases, cripples members' ability to be effective.

David Burstein is founder and CEO Run for America. He said many people feel left out of politics, and that change is the only option in the future.

"People are frustrated," said Burstein. "We have the least effective Congress in history. We have the oldest and most polarized Congress in history. That's not something people are just going to continue to shrug their shoulders about."

According to Troiano, Cantor's defeat is symbolic of a political evolution in the country.

"The electorate is primed to support new candidates running in new ways," said Troiano. "Because America deserves better than politics as usual."
