NC Women Take Their Concerns to Washington

WASHINGTON – Today the subject of working families will be top of mind in Washington, and more than two dozen North Carolina women will be among those taking their concerns to the White House.

Today President Barack Obama is hosting the White House Summit on Working Families.

Raleigh resident Melissa Bravo, who will be there, says her employer said her job was in jeopardy after finding out she was pregnant.

She says the stress led to health complications and early labor.

"We need to have the security, the knowledge, that we will not be discriminated against because of pregnancy, that we will have jobs," she stresses.

The summit comes on the heels of a national report released by the National Partnership for Women and Families.

It gives North Carolina a D grade for its lack of supportive policies for families.

North Carolina did receive recognition for family medical leave benefits for state employees who have been on the job for less than a year.

Vicki Shabo, one of the report’s authors, says while that's welcome news, those in the private sector still need help.

"North Carolina earns a D in this report,” she says. “It's one of 31 states that earns a D or a failing grade for taking very little action to support new and expecting parents."

Kim Pevia of Robeson County is also in Washington today. She's a member of Women AdvaNCe, a statewide nonprofit educational organization.

She says while her county is one of the poorest in the country, the answer to economic success can be found in women like her.

"We know that we have resources here that women could do around entrepreneurship with our arts, our local food,” she explains. “So we believe that we could change our own economy with just a little bit of resources and outside help."

The United States is one of the few countries that does not offer workers access to paid leave.
