Moth Week Celebrates “Butterflies of the Night”

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Dig out the flashlights for a nighttime adventure to celebrate National Moth Week.

It highlights the role moths play in the ecosystem. They're pollinators, and their caterpillars are food for other species.

Scott Shaw is a professor and curator of the University of Wyoming Insect Museum, where he runs a moth display. He's also written a book about moths and other insects. He said moth-hunting can be as simple as turning on a porch light and observing what shows up, or hanging a white sheet and pointing a flashlight behind it.

"In our area, the white-lined sphinx moth is quite common," explained Shaw. "You can see that at flowers, especially in the evening or on cloudy days. It's a flower-feeder and they fly very quickly. The wings beat very fast, so they look a lot like a hummingbird."

If you want to provide habitat for moths, Shaw recommended choosing native plants for landscaping, finding out what plants moth larvae prefer, and dialing back on the use of pesticides.

"Although lights are a great way to see moths," said Shaw, "light pollution in cities and towns creates a major problem for moth conservation in many areas. One thing you can do is simply use less outdoor light."

Shaw's habitat tips also benefit many other species.

Scientists have estimated there are up to 500,000 species of moth, though the exact number is unknown. It's thought that some moth species are declining.
