Harvest Gathering Under Way to Stock Food Banks

LANSING, Mich. - Nearly 17-percent of Michiganders struggle with hunger, and almost a quarter of the state's children don't know where their next meal is coming from. That's why state leaders are coordinating the Michigan Harvest Gathering to help raise funds and food for those in need. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is co-founder of Harvest Gathering. He says back in 1991, he and his wife wanted to find a way to help strengthen the state's emergency-food response. Over the years that idea has grown into a statewide campaign.

"It's an effort of state employees in Lansing who do such a great job, and private businesses, and associations, and individuals, sometimes it's hospitals, and schools that have food drives," says Schuette.

This year's goal is to raise $350,000 and 300,000 pounds of food, which organizers say would provide two million meals. Non-perishable items can be dropped off at any Secretary of State branch through October, and donations can be made at FeedMichigan.org.

As the state works to pull itself out of tough times, Schuette says the food-bank network is stretched thin.

"Every small contribution of food, or a financial contribution can help make a difference," he says. "It adds up, so it's a nice way to help folks, particularly during this harvest time."

Now in its 24th year, the Harvest Gathering has raised nearly $9 million and nine-million pounds of food for the state's network of food banks and pantries.
