DES MOINES, Iowa - Hundreds of thousands of people across Iowa are lacing up their sneakers today as part of the fourth annual Healthiest State Walk. Organizer Terry Rich, chairman of the Healthiest State Walk, says the event encourages residents to get active and walk at least one kilometer or roughly 12 minutes, as part of the larger effort to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

"We have a whole group of volunteers across the state urging every Iowan to renew a commitment to a healthier lifestyle," says Rich. "To walk, to bike, to eat a little healthier. Today is a good day to take the first step toward a better health, and healthier Iowa."

Rich says the goal is a half-million people, which would make this the largest statewide walk to date.

Among those taking part, according to Rich, are students in dozens of school districts, Iowa National Guard members at some 52 armories, and a growing number of Iowa businesses and their employees.

"The Greater Des Moines Partnership is having the 'East meet the West' at the river, where all the businesses on the east side of the river are going to meet the businesses on the west side of the river to do their 1K walk," says Rich. "So, a lot of unique, a lot of fun, a lot of creative ways but mainly to get out on a beautiful October day and to just get a little healthier."

Rich adds these efforts appear to be paying off. Iowa is now ranked 10th best in the nation for being physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy, up from 19th place when the Healthiest State Initiative was first launched.
