SALT LAKE CITY - Part of today's #GivingTuesday effort in Utah is calling on residents to support their local communities, particularly in the wake of the massive consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Utah AIDS Foundation is one of several nonprofits in the state partnering on #GivingTuesday efforts. Stan Penfold, executive director at the Utah AIDS Foundation, says nonprofits are already accustomed to receiving donations in the fourth quarter of the year.

"Providing people with an opportunity to give with their credit card online in a really easy fashion is a great way for us to reach out," says Penfold.

Penfold says his organization works with people living with HIV-AIDS, and their families, to ensure they have access to quality medical care.

"Our goal is really to remove any barriers that might get in the way from somebody seeing their physician," he says. "That can be anything from insurance, housing assistance, to transportation - a whole variety of services we provide."

Penfold says today people can live with AIDS for 20 years and longer, whereas in the 1990s an HIV patient might live only two years from the time of diagnosis.

Donations can be made directly to the Utah AIDS Foundation. More information on donating to other nonprofits is at the #GivingTuesday website at www.GivingTuesday.org.

According to the #GivingTuesday website, the movement was founded in 2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, and to date has engaged more than 10,000 organizations worldwide.
