LANSING, Mich. - After several big shopping days, Michiganders have the opportunity to shift the focus away from consumerism today by making a charitable donation on what has been dubbed #GivingTuesday.

Bill Gesaman, director of stakeholder engagement with the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), says this is the third year for the international day of giving back. While many people have traditionally waited until the very end of the year to make donations, Gesaman says charities have turned #GivingTuesday into a day to make donated dollars go further.

"They find a foundation or a corporation to say 'Hey, I'm going to match every dollar that is given to your organization on Giving Tuesday,'" says Gesaman. "It's kind of a unique twist to incentivize and exponentially scale up your gift."

While #GivingTuesday is a global effort, the MNA is working to spotlight Michigan charities and donors. Participants are encouraged to tag photos and social media posts with the hashtag #GivingTuesdayMI.

Gesaman says the social media-driven #GivingTuesday effort has been picking up steam each year, particularly with millenials, who he says are becoming an important force in the nonprofit sector.

"They're already on Twitter, they're already on Instagram and Facebook," he says. "We're certainly seeing a stronger desire to give back to the community through millenials."

Gesaman stresses that Michiganders should research any charity prior to making a donation. The MNA has a guide on its website to supporting Michigan nonprofits called Giving Wisely.
