COLUMBUS, Ohio – Open enrollment for health coverage through the Marketplace for 2015 is under way, but there's just one week to register for coverage beginning Jan. 1.

A statewide network of organizations is connecting Ohioans with resources that will help them make informed decisions regarding their health insurance.

Jason Elchert, deputy director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks says the Are You Covered? campaign provides counselors and navigators, who can walk people through the process, explaining marketplace plan options and costs.

"But also make sure that they are being connected with the appropriate provider or primary care physician because we really want to get folks connected at that primary care level because that's where we're going to see the most benefit from health insurance and Medicaid," Elchert says.

Elchert adds the free sessions take place in person or over the phone and are available for those signing up for the first time, renewing their current plan or enrolling in Medicaid.

Last year, counselors and navigators with the Ohio Network for Health Coverage and Enrollment helped 37,000 Ohioans enroll in new health-insurance plans.

More than 100,000 Ohioans will be renewing the policies they purchased a year ago, and Elchert says many made decisions where they didn't fully understand the full cost of the plan.

"They may have looked at the premium cost, but did not understand that if they enrolled in a lower level, what we call a bronze plan, that they were not eligible for cost sharing or discounts that come with a silver plan," he explains.

He says policies have changed for 2015, so it's important that people take a fresh look to ensure their plan meets their needs and budget.

This year, Ohio has 16 health insurance issuers offering more than 200 plan options.

The open-enrollment periods runs through Feb. 15.
