SANTA FE, N.M. - "Food and Farms Day" at the state Capitol is part of an ongoing effort to support New Mexico's farm economy by giving farmers a better chance to provide healthy, nutritious and locally grown foods to schools and communities around the state.

"It's really looking at food and farming in what we call a 'systemic approach' - how everything is connected, and it takes all of us to really make that system work," said Pamela Roy, executive director of the nonprofit group Farm to Table, which is among the organizations supporting the event.

Roy said there will be more than 100 food vendors, entrepreneurs, farmers and others at the event, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in the state Capitol rotunda.

Roy said it's a show of support for House Bill 96 and other policy efforts in the current legislative session. The bill would allocate more than $1.4 million for the state to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from New Mexico farmers for use in school meals. Roy said the bill's supporters are making the point that backing local agriculture is good for students' health and also the economy.

"For every dollar we spend on local food," she said, "in this environment in New Mexico, that dollar in our community turns over almost four times."

Roy said states are having to pay for fresh fruits and vegetables in school meals because the federal government sets the nutritional standards but doesn't always fully fund the meal programs.

The bill is online at nmlegis.gov.
