ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Teaching young children and reminding parents of the value of good oral health is the mission of National Children's Dental Health Month, sponsored each February by the American Dental Association.

Rudy Blea with the New Mexico Department of Health's Office of Oral Health says about one in four children under the age of five already has cavities. He says taking care of one's teeth should start at an early age.

"The American Pediatric Society recommends a child by the age of one to be seeing a dentist," says Blea. "And little children, as soon as their teeth are erupting, need to have their parents taking care of their teeth."

Blea says good oral health means brushing teeth for two minutes twice a day, as well as daily flossing and regular dental checkups.

Diet is another important factor for good oral health. Blea says parents should try and limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks their children consume to help avoid tooth decay. He adds that eating healthy isn't the only reason for good nutrition.

"If you're eating healthy, hopefully you'll be preventing the incidence of obesity by having the child and the parents, schools, etc., focusing on eating healthy as well," he says.

According to Blea, New Mexico contracts with dental providers for preventive and treatment services for thousands of low-income and uninsured families in the state. For children, those services can include dental sealants, fluoride varnish and treating dental diseases.
