SALT LAKE CITY – State Sen. Jim Dabakis is among those saying President Barack Obama's first visit to Utah as president on Friday is overdue.

Dabakis has lobbied Obama to visit the state through a petition on Facebook, and sponsored Senate Resolution 3, which invites the First Family to visit Utah's five national parks.

White House officials say the visit is for an economic event.

Dabakis says he believes Obama's economic record speaks for itself.

"Unemployment was at 7.8 percent when he took over and it's 5.8 percent,” he points out. “The GDP growth was negative 5.4 percent, it's at plus 3.5 percent. Consumer confidence was 38 percent when he took over, it's at 95 percent."

Dabakis adds that the Dow Jones Industrial Average has more than doubled since Obama took office.

Utah and South Dakota are the only states the president has not visited since being elected.

Dabakis says despite Utah being a Republican stronghold, he believes Obama will get a warm welcome.

"Even those that may not love him as president, they would be thrilled to have the president of the United States visit Utah,” Dabakis states. “So, we're very happy that he's coming."
